Keaton Fenwick - Design, Arts, and Technology Capstone Research Post 4
The cameras are rolling, and the journey of bringing my short film to life has officially begun! However, like any ambitious project, the first day on set came with its fair share of challenges. While we managed to capture some great footage, I quickly realized that our efficiency could be greatly improved. From time management to directing a large cast, I knew I had to refine my approach before moving forward.
Determined to make the most of our future shoot days, I dove into research on how to streamline the filmmaking process and effectively manage a large cast of characters. Two particularly insightful articles provided invaluable guidance: White Buffalo Film Studios’ “10 Essential Tips for Planning a Successful Film Shoot” and TCK Publishing’s guide on handling large casts.
Filming Scenes Efficiently:
White Buffalo Film Studios outlines ten crucial tips for a smooth film shoot, and a few of them stood out as particularly relevant to my situation.
The first being pre-visualization, while I had a clear vision for each scene, I realized that having a more detailed outline could prevent last-minute decisions that slow us down.
The second was efficient scheduling, I needed to be more strategic with our shot list, ensuring we grouped similar setups together rather than frequently changing locations.
Finally, the last was that communication is key, a well-informed cast and crew make for a smoother shoot. Moving forward, I’ll focus on briefing everyone more thoroughly before we begin filming each day.

How To Manage a Large Cast:
One of the biggest challenges of our shoot has been coordinating a large number of characters. TCK Publishing highlights several strategies to keep things organized.
The first is character prioritization, not all characters require equal screen time. I realized that by focusing on the most essential roles first, we could keep our schedule tighter and avoid unnecessary delays.
The next is distinct personalities and roles, this tip made me think critically about making each character’s role stand out in a clear and concise way, reducing confusion during blocking and directing.
Then the third and last is strong leadership, the article emphasized the importance of having a firm but flexible leadership style to keep everyone focused and the production on track. This is something I’m actively working on improving.

Moving Forward:
With these insights in mind, I’m excited to tackle our next filming days with a much more structured approach. Efficiency doesn’t mean sacrificing creativity—it means making room for even better storytelling. This experience has already been a tremendous learning opportunity, and I can’t wait to see how these adjustments enhance our production process.
